Uncle Grey with a catch
Uncle Grey with a catch

Moments spent in Keoladeo Ghana National Park, Bharatpur in Dec 10 were truely cherishable. Sitting near the banks of one of the water body, could witness Grey Heron busy fishing the cat fishes as an early morning breakfast. A pure display of patience and precision.. Being absolutely still for minutes waiting for the right opportunity and once received, grabbing it, tossing it, and gulping it as a whole. Truely a treat to watch and a lesson to learn indeed.. Nature Teaches !!!!

About Grey Heron, it is a large bird, standing 90–100 cm tall, with a 175–195 cm wingspan and a weight of 1–2 kg. Its plumage is largely grey above, and off-white below. Adults have a white head and slender crest, while immatures have a dull grey head. It has a powerful, pinkish-yellow bill, which is brighter in breeding adults. It has a slow flight, with its long neck retracted (S-shaped).

It feeds in shallow water, catching fish (as you can see in this image), frogs and insects with its long bill. Herons will also take small mammals, reptiles and occasionally warbler nestlings, plovers, young and adult snipes, takes ducklings and tern chicks and other small birds. This is a common bird in the Asian subcontinent and a sighting in and around rural marshy places.
