Eyes of Flames

One of the memorable sighting of our Rann of Kutch trip late in 2010 and truely the gem of Kutch. With untimely rains, the birding season that year had really gone for a toss. Kutch, which ideally is a treat to be in Decembers, happened to be deserted in its true sense. With the sight of this raftor, I was absolutely mesmerised with his eyes, crawled quite a distance to get this full frame shot in the setting sun.

Short-eared Owl (Asio flammeus) is a species of typical owl (family Strigidae).

Owls belonging to genus Asio are known as the eared owls, as they have tufts of feathers resembling mammalian ears. These “ear” tufts may or may not be visible. Asio flammeus will display its tufts when in a defensive pose. However, its very short tufts are usually not visible. The Short-eared Owl is found in open country and grasslands. The word flammeus is Latin for “flaming, or the color of fire”.
