Eurasian Spoonbill Eurasian Spoonbill

My first visit to Little Rann of Kutch (LRK) was way back in the winters of 2009. With my recently bought Sigma 150-500, I was absolutely excited to have LRK as the testing ground which happens to be a paradise for any birder. We reached our resort, Rann Riders, in the morning by 8ish… By the time the sun was bright in the sky and we thought of spending our first half in the resort campus and catch up on some birding there. In the nearby pond, along with the heard of Painted Storks, we could catch up with Eurasian Spoon Bills, wagtails, kingfishers, herons etc.

The Eurasian Spoonbill or Common Spoonbill is a wading bird of the ibis and spoonbill family. This species is almost unmistakable in most of its range. The breeding bird is all white except for its dark legs, black bill with a yellow tip, and a yellow breast patch like a pelican. It has a crest in the breeding season. Non-breeders lack the crest and breast patch, and immature birds have a pale bill and black tips to the primary flight feathers. Unlike herons, spoonbills fly with their necks outstretched.
