Dalmatian Pelican

Thol Bird Sanctuary, Ahmadabad happens to be a happening place for birders during the winters especially when the rain gods do showers as per the seasons and does not disturb the migratory cycle. It was 2009 when we visited Thol for the first time and I was in love with this place.

After a long walk to the circumference of the lake, we decided to position ourselves at a place where there were likely chances of getting a good angle and adequate sunlight in proper direction. Waiting for the subjects to approach, we were calm and shooting the group of Dalmatian pelicans who were busy resting. Lucky to get some shots of this chap who could manage to come a bit closer to us, unknowingly.

The Dalmatian Pelican is a member of the pelican family. This is the largest of the pelicans, averaging 170–190 cm (67-75 inches) in length, 11–15 kg (24-33 lbs) in weight and just over 3 m (10 ft) in wingspan. On average, it is the world’s heaviest flying species. This pelican migrates short distances. In flight, it is an elegant soaring bird, with the flock moving in synchrony. This pelican eats fish and small birds.
