Great Cormorant fishing
Great Cormorant fishing

It was a treat to watch these cormorants fish in the water bodies at Keoladeo Ghana National Park. With quality time spend near this water body, it was an absolute pleasure to watch them swim and observed their behaviour. With a pond surface of approx a football field, there use to be at any given point in time 5-7 Great Cormorants enjoying their swim alongside darters. Usually these gang is also accompanied by Rosy Pellicans but to our tough luck we only found them early morning. The pond filled densely with catfishes, their hunt was obvious. With the fish population dense near the bank of these pond, there was all the more chance of getting to witness this action to get better shots. These cormorants use to dive deep into the pond and we use to be optimistic that they come out with a catch. After few futile dives, there was some success. If you feel this was the end of a success story, then guys..... you are mistaken.. The battle for the fittest started from this catch. From all corners of the pond, the fella cormorants use to hurry to grab this catch. An absolute “rugby” match was witnessed with splashes of water as all the cormorants had a single goal – grab the priced fish and gulp it.

This is the moment captured wherein this cormorant has his priced catch and is dogging it from his fellow companions to buy time to gulp it entirely. Ahhh!!! A treat indeed.
