Barred Jungle Owlet

The Jungle Owlet or Barred Jungle Owlet is found in India and the dry zone of Sri Lanka. The species is often found singly, in pairs or small groups and are usually detected by their calls at dawn and dusk.

This small owlet has a rounded head and is finely barred all over. There is no clear facial disk and the wings are brownish and the tail is narrowly barred in white. They are found in habitats ranging from scrub forest to deciduous and moist deciduous forests.

This owlet is mainly active at dawn and dusk, but is known to call and fly during the daytime as well. They roost inside tree cavities and when disturbed they perch still and appear like a dead tree stump. They sometimes perch prominently on wires. They sometimes bask in the morning before retiring to their roost. Their key feeding hours are an hour before sunrise and after sunset. Diet consists of insects, small birds and reptiles, and rodents.

This photograph was clicked during our extremely short visit to Sattal. On the way as we approached towards the curvy steep roads of our Sattal Resort, we could manage to spot this chap busy sitting on a nearby dry branch. It was just on the verge of reaching dusk. As soon as the car stopped on the gates of the resort, we without wasting any time, unpacked our gears and started racing down towards the spot, I was the lucky one to get few snaps of this chap. Watching me racing towards the spot a group of young children ran after me, curious as to what was I upto.. Their young throats made quite a yelling which ultimately disturbed the chap and off he flew.
